So why was my monitor working fine with Win Me and now not with Win XP since XP is so much superior? This doesn't make any sense.

Different drivers.
I run Win98SE, WinMe and Win2000 at home and the Hulk game will not play in Win98 or WinMe (freezes up on graphics) but works fine in Wn2000.
Also recently discovered that since replacing my Nvidia Mx 200 with ATI Radeon 9250, Lego Island 2 doesn't work in Win98SE or WinMe any more but works fine in Win2000 - The lego site says it's not supported in Win2000 / XP so work that out.

So what's my next move? Buy a LCD monitor then find out it doesn't work? I do have a 15" Compaq monitor from 1999 that I should test, but I don't want to step down from a 17".

Why not try the easy stuff first?
See the following instructions:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Display.
3. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
4. Click the Troubleshoot tab.
5. Drag the Hardware acceleration slider bar one step to the left to lower the acceleration level.
Open your mind, not your computer.
