    Scepol.log

    Hi there,

Using W2k (spp4) in C:\WINNT\security\logs, I have an increasingly large log file called. scepol.log. When I defrag, this will not defrag and is currently left in about 50 scattered chunks.

Googled this file and didn't find anything really useful, apart from a reg. tweak to reduce its size to 1 mb. I have added the reg key and now find that no new entries are being added to this log even though it is currently close to twice that size.

Does this mean that I am able to delete it?

    Grateful for any advice,

    Rex

You can stop the logging altogether, after which you can certainly delete the file altogether if it remains. It requires a registry hack:

    Gentlemen,

Those are the links I found and the reg hack I installed. But there is no mention (that I can see) of whether it is safe to delete the file.

As for the MS hotfix, is it just me or is the MS web site a masterpiece of confusion information?

Guess I could rename scepol.log and see what happens. I have tried to delete it but get a sharing violation message. May be it can be deleted from Safe Mode.

From what I can gather ...
    Filename: %systemroot%\security\logs\scepol.log
Service or program: Security Configuration Engine
    Windows versions: 2000, XP, 2003
Description: LSA API log used by GPO (i.e., local security authority application programming interface log used by the group policy object)

    SpyWare DR,

Many thanks but what does it mean? Can I delete it? If it is recreated again, that is fine; it will be smaller.

Thanks for the Move On Boot link. Renamed scepol.log and W2k has recreated it, much smaller. So can now delete the old one.

Why can't MS just tell it like it is. This file is necessary, it can be deleted but will be recreated; simple.

    You're welcome.

Don't know why Microsoft does/doesn't do a lot of things.
