Resolved [RESOLVED] Where did my optical drive go after hard drive replacement?

I just replaced my old 20GB IDE hard drive with a new Maxtor 300GB SATA hard drive. My new hard drive is set up as the master drive, with another 40GB Maxtor hard drive set as the slave. The 40GB drive has all the data that my computer boots from (eg. Microsoft XP SP2 and all OS related data) and the new 300GB drive has been set up as a storage drive.

When I took out the old 20GB drive, I unhooked the ribbon cable and the power cable. The power cable appeared to be in 'series' with another drive, so I hooked a 4pin power cable to SATA adapter cable to the new Maxtor drive. That seems like it works fine. The ribbon cable connection from the old 20GB drive was also in 'series' with the other connection in the 'series' going to the optical drive that isn't showing up on the system. This optical drive is a CD-RW drive. Did unhooking the ribbon cable from the old 20GB hard drive disable the CD-RW drive also?

Any ideas how I might get my computer to again recognize the 'lost' optical drive?

Below is a summary from Everest Home Edition of the present state of my computer:

You need to check the jumper settings on the drives. On each ribbon cable one device is Master and the other is Slave (usually the hard drive is Master and the Optical drive is slave, but it isn't essential to have them connected like that). If there is only a single device on the cable then set it to Master.

Are there standard jumper settings for drives? I don't have a manual for that CD-RW to show me the jumper setting configurations. In other words is there a standard jumper setting configuration for CD-RW drives for Master?

    Thanks

No, the drive manufacturer determines the jumper settings, and they do vary from drive to drive. But if you look on the casing, you will see a diagram (it's usually stamped into the metal) showing the correct settings.

another point... hard drive manufacturers have specs online for most of their drives for jumper settings.
I download manuals & print off the jumper settings for later use.
