In general English, the words are pretty much opposites. Active means doing something, passive means just letting things happen around you.

In computing, the terms get bent quite a bit -- all five scenarios you mention have their own meanings for the terms, although everything except FTP kind of makes sense with the English meanings. FTP is a bit weird -- active FTP refers to the traditional data connection where the server connects back to the client, and passive FTP is where the client connects to the server a second time.
Safe computing is a habit, not a toolkit.

A passive attack occurs when someone listens to or eavesdrops on network traffic.

Active attack: Once an attacker has gained sufficient information from the passive attack, the hacker can then launch an active attack against the network

In this case, being passive means that he is not attacking...
Being active, he can launch an attack, such as hacking into their system, or sending DOS attacks etc.
