Exclamation .sav file - can't open it!

    Hi people,

Does anyone know how to open a .sav file? Basically a mate of mine can't open a .sav file that her lecturer has put on her uni intranet. I believe it's to do with SPSS but have no experience of this.

Must be some kind of download that opens it?

    Thanks

    Sam

Various programs use this extension; too many to list individually. Take clues from the location of the file as a possible pointer to exactly which program is producing the file. The file's date and time can also help if you know which programs you were running when the file was written.

If all else fails, you may be able to find out what program it needs to open it by examining the file with a Hex editor. Look at the first few bytes of the file and it often gives the info that you need. Here are some good freeware Hex editors:

mastreblig--See here for a description of spss (written for UTexas, but I suspect the description applies universally)

    And for opening .sav files

But the lecturer should have told students how to open these files (and how to get the software to do it). Has your friend asked the lecturer, fellow students?

    .sav

    Cheers guys,

I'm still no closer to turning the junk I get in to something readable though!

I get $FL2@(#) SPSS DATA FILE MS WINDOWS RELEASE 13.0 SPSS1032.dll...3y@29 Nov 051 6:13:36 if that is any help?!

I used the hex editor to get this but I also get this when I simply use Word and Excel to try and open it.

Following this are what are obviously some data values and efgegfegfegfefhehfehfegfgegfegfegfefhfefeff or something to that effect!

Any bright ideas or will only the SPSS software open this?!?

The big problem is that she has gone home and would have to drive all the way back up to uni next week just for this file.

    Thanks for the help people,

    G
