Hi Copo
If you open network connections in the control panel and select the properties of the wireless connection there should be a box to tick which says show icon in notification area when connected. The missing icon will not stop the connection working so are you having wireless problems or is it just the missing icon your worried about?

Ah right gotcha.........
What wireless device are you using i.e. internal mini PCI,usb,PCMCIA and whats the make and model?
Have you checked device manager for any errors?
If your running XP/2K have a look in the event viewer via admin tools for any recent errors and post the error codes.

The PC doesn't recognize any wireless. I have a linksys wireless router at home and the PC is my GF's. She had to take a RJ45 cable to connect to the University's Lan before teaching her class. It's like the PC dropped the wireless software from XP. She's going to take it to the Tech guys since it's the Univ laptop and the fixes are at no charge....thx anyways. I thought this would have been an easy fix. I had no trouble adding a conneciton so it would see the router at home a month ago. It's worked for a month. Maybe when she downloaded MSN it screwed something up. That's the only mod to the laptop so far.

Make sure that the actual wireless on off button is turned on. It is usually a button in the front of the laptop on the right hand side that has to be pushed in before the blue wireless connection light will come on. I had the same thing on a laptop that I had and all I had to do was push the little button in to turn the wireless on. It could be that simple. Look at number 10 on this diagram. Missing icon
I also have this same problem. My wireless icon is missing in the system tray and all of the icons in the Connections after the start button are ALL MISSING. i can connect to the internet at my house, which is where I last used the connection before I had this problem, but it doesn't recognize new connections in a different wireless area. So I'm not sure what to do here.
Here is what microsoft has to say.
Seems easy enough, the problem i'm having is i think it's saying that you can only have this problem if you've installed the hotfix829652 and if that's the case then you need this new hotfix 894543 to fix the problem. The problem i have is that to my knowlege i haven't installed any hotfix nor do i know what a hotfix is, and it says if this is not exactly the problem you are experiencing then you shouldn't install this hot fix. SO.... what do you think??

SYMPTOMS
When you open your Network Connections folder in Microsoft Windows XP, you find that your network connections are not listed. The network connection icons are missing, including the wireless network connection icon.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if the following conditions are true: • There is an invalid entry in the Rasphone.pbk file. Some third-party programs may create invalid entries in the Rasphone.pbk file.
• You have installed the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
829652 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829652/) You cannot log on after you correctly change your log on credentials
If there is an invalid entry in the Rasphone.pbk file, and hotfix 829652 is not installed, Windows does not parse the invalid entry. However, if hotfix 829652 is installed, Windows will try to process the invalid entry, and this may prevent Rasman.dll from fully initializing. When this problem occurs, the network connection icons are not created in the Network Connections folder.
Note We do not recommend that you manually change the .pbk file.
