    My regedit.exe file is 'missing'

    Hello Folks...

Recently I purchased 'software' and had to go through the usual proceedure of 'Registration'

When I enter the codes given by the 'supplier' I get the message of

Windows cannot find 'regedit.exe' on your computer. So I went into Search - Run and typed in regedit.exe and it tells me that it could not find it.

I have been nobbled I think because I am also having problems with IE6 that goes off on a tangent of duplicating the page 'cannot find the server' at an alarming pace. So perhaps these problems are related.

I do hope that with my limited 'jargon' you will be able to understand my problem.

    Thank you in antisipation.

Try putting your XP CD in your drive, and go to Start|Run|sfc /scannow

That should replace any corrupt or missing system files.

I think it *should* work, to be honest i've never tried it, try it, if it works, a small box should popup to show it is doing something, and then go off again....remove the disc, reboot, and see how things go with the install.

    Try doing
    Start > Run > Regedit

Does it start or do you get a DOS looking window, or does it appear to start and then end.

    Also, try doing
    Start > Run > Regedit.exe

If you are experiencing the first symptoms, you have a virus.

WhitPhil many thanks for your help too..

    Try doing
    Start > Run > Regedit

This result is...Windows cannot find 'regedit.exe' etc

Does it start or do you get a DOS looking window, or does it appear to start and then end.

    Also, try doing
    Start > Run > Regedit.exe

This result was the same as before... Windows cannot find 'regedit.

If you are experiencing the first symptoms, you have a virus.

Trying Start Run sfc /scannow I get a flas of a black empty screen with my daughters CD.

    Hello BobUK

You cannot use an XP Pro CD to run sfc on an XP Home system.

I too think you have a virus like Sircam or Swen

Run these online scans.Take a note of anything they find in case some repairs are needed later. Let then fix anything they find.

    Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

    Trend Micro Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If they don`t fix it try running this tool
    http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ven...oval.tool.html

Post back if these don`t help

If it ain't broke, leave it alone.

If her CD is retail and yours is OEM, her CD may not be of any help. OEM computers usually have their own required gobbledygook that isn't found on retail CDs. You're best off using the rescue disk if you can find it.

    Check the Recycle Bin.

There should be a spare copy of Regedit.exe in the Windows\System32\Dllcache folder. Copy it into the main Windows folder and it ought to work.

Dunedin...Thanks to you for your input but the 'virus' will not let me get into these sites, the system runs out of time to load up.

I am using my daughters PC at the moment.
