    Virus-like activity?

    hi everyone,

My friend's computer is really acting strange this past couple of weeks. Every few hours, there are .gif files being added to her "My Documents" folder. When she deletes them, they slowly keep coming back.

She has Norton AV 2002 installed and fully updated on her computer, yet it does not detect anything suspicious. She also has a firewall program installed.

One of the files it keeps re-making is the fat.db file. The other files appear to be bits and pieces of her ISP's webpage. Quarantining the files does not appear to help....more just keep appearing.

This really sounds like a virus..... or could it be something else?

thanks for any ideas or suggestions

Sounds like she uses Netscape and her temporary internet files is set to use that folder.

I don't use netscape myself so I don't know how to change where it stores its files. See if you can find something under options or preferences.

Of course if she doesn't use netscape disregard this.

    I'm with Troy.
Fat.db is the Netscape equivalent of IE's Index.dat.

From Netscape, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Cache
and change the Disk Cache Folder to some other location.
(You could create a Netscape Cache directory under \Windows\Temp, for example, and point it there)
