XP data recovery - system trashed
I am helping a friend rebuild her pc. the old mobo went dead and we will have to reinstall and rebuild the system. i have her xp cd, and hard drive but not the coa key. this is a white box system that will not boot. can i pull the coa off of the hard drive before we format it?
BUT HERE IS THE CATCH --> her system wont boot anymore, so i popped her drive into my box. i have access to her data, but i cannot find the coa key.
i know that the belarc advisor shows the key on an active system; in this case i need to find the key on a secondary hard drive... any ideas?

The key is encrypted, so unless you can boot into that original Windows install there isn't a thing you can do to recover the key.
If you have proof of purchase of Windows, and it isn't an OEM version, then contacting Microsoft would be worth a try, it might be possible to get a new key.
