What's the make and model of the scanner, and which O/S are you using?

See if this works:
-Uninstall the scanner's software in Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs
-Shut down the computer
-Make sure the scanner is connected to the system
-Restart the computer
-When Windows finds the new hardware and asks to install drivers for it, click Cancel
-Insert the scanner's driver CD
-When the CD's program starts, click on the 'Install Driver'(or similar) button, and follow the instructions.
(NOTE: If the CD has no 'Install Driver' button to click on, then remove the driver CD, restart the computer, when Windows finds the new hardware and asks to install drivers for it then insert the CD, click Browse, click on your CD-ROM drive's letter, look in the CD's contents for a Windows 98 folder that has a .inf file, click on that file, and click OK/OK)
