You don't want to find a copy of this file because it is part of a Trojan that infected your PC.
See this link for details on how to remove it. http://vil.mcafee.com/vil/tro10393.asp
It involves editing your SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI files, editing your System Registry using REGEDIT and looking for and deleting a bunch of files on your harddrive.
Post back if you need help.

Do I need kerne1.exe? Will it hurt if I don't have it?

Kerne1.exe IS the SubSeven Trojan.
You DO NOT want (or need) this file.
If your antivirus has quarantined it, great.
But, be aware that this potentially allowed someone to have remote access into your PC. As a result, you should immediately change all of your passwords, everywhere.
Also, you should install a firewall.
ZoneAlarm at www.zonealarm.com is a free one.
