lost internet connection
My kids PC is dell dimension 2350:
Win2k op
2 ghz pent4
128 mg ram
40 gig hd
cable internet
has spyware/adware issues. Have cleaned them up.
Spybot 1.3/adaware
no internet though.
trying to load avg antivirus. tough to do without internet.
tried winsock fix.
no help!
also
have tried both ethernet and wireless.
tried uninstall/install of network adapters...no good
uninstall/install tcp/ip...no good
static ip...no good
loopback ping works.
ping to router is not reachable.
ipconfig says "cable disconnected"
seems like socket is corrupt. have winsock disk to repair WinXP connection and it runs but still no connection.
dont really want to reinstall win2k!

allow me to reply to myself!
i was able to remove the ethernet network adapter (Broadcom) and then uninstalled/installed TCP/IP and i still cannot believe it but it worked, but i can now get hardwired connection.
I loaded AVG and detected and removed 16 virus and more spyware/adware.
Now i am trying to get linksys WUSB11 wireless adapter to work. This is what they have and will use to connect to internet. Did the same drill removed/installed adapter...etc and get message that "network cable is unplugged"?
