Converting from Firewire to Ethernet
There are some guys that swear this exists, but they're looking for a cable that converts from 1394 firewire to cat5 ethernet. They say it's just a cable, not a converter box or anything and they're trying to transfer files from one computer to the other, one having 1394 the other only cat5.
Any suggestions?

Why not just put a firewire card in the odd machine??

"There are some guys that swear this exists"
Ask them if they are willing to make a little wager on it.
No such thing exists or even could exist - sorry. The MAC and PHY layers of Ethernet are completely different than 1394 (1394 doesn't even have a MAC layer). The baseband signaling methods aren't even similar.
The only "converter" you'll find isn't a "converter" - just a bridge.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think anything of the sort existed, but these guys calimed they had used one before. They wouldn't put anything in the old machine because they were afraid it would mess it up and they wouldn't take our advice and just take the hard drive out of the old machine and hook it up in the new one because they were afraid it would mess up their operating system and other files already on the hard drive in the new machine.
No matter how much we told them that the hard drive out of the old machine wouldn't touch any files on the new one, they wouldn't listen, and of course believing that this cable existed and that we didn't know what we were talking about they just thought were idiots.
Thanks,

The work in this area seems to be aimed largely at home A/V applications, but... Some info:
