What the Heck is an .IDX file

ALl of a sudden in my SHared MUSIC folder in WIN XP, I have about 1200 IDX files....

I have never seen these files before, they are only showing up now (Ive had the PC for a year or so)

What are these ? Where do they come from and how do I get rid of them, or can i even?

    Thanks all

    Matt
I want to share something with you --the three sentences that will get you through life. Number one, "Cover for me." Number two, "Oh, good idea, boss." Number three, "It was like that when I got here."

It would appear it could be one of several things, see if any of these ring a bell:

Those files wouldn't happen to be iTunes related would they?

Do you,by any chance, have AOL installed? I ask because .idx is perhaps an extension for their 'temporary internet mail'...

I have Itunes loaded, but I rarely use it. Maybe I will try to uninstall and see if the files go away.

    Thanks

Generically, .IDX files ARE index files, but may not fit the format criteria on the links already provided... Many proprietary file systems also use the "obvious" extension of .IDX for the indexes, but may have a proprietary format.

I have considerable experience with this type of thing...send me a Private Message and attach just one of these files and I'll try to give you a specific answer!
