"windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Use SCANREG..."

    Hello,
I went on vacation for about 2 days and came back. Turned on the computer and for some reason it gave me the message:
(it can't go on normal mode, but safe mode...)

"windows has detected a registry/configuration error.
use SCANREG to correct this error."

...and that i'm supposed to go on safe mode. So when i go on safe mode, the computer just freezes on the greyish white screen. Is this a common problem?
I am basically stuck there...i really hope reformatting my computer is not the choice. Could it be a virus?
    * It also said something about 'new hardware installed' but i'm pretty sure i did not install anything....

Please help, your help will most definitely be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Leonard

Since you mention Scanreg I'll assume you are using Win9x or ME, not XP.

If this is Win98 then I would boot to a command prompt (instead of going in to the windows GUI) and and try to do a SCANREG /RESTORE to see if you can restore a working backup copy of your registry from a day before this all started happening.

If this is WinME you have a bit more of a problem. You cannot get to a command prompt, so running SCANREG /RESTORE requires booting up in safe mode and issuing the command via START --> RUN. If your system is freezing immediately at the desktop though...

    Hopefully you have win98.

There could be several reasons why this happened (some software, some hardware). But hopefully it is just a on-off thing and restoring the registry to a previous version will resolve things,

Your help is so much appreciated...
i do have windows me, i somewhat understand your instructions, but uh my computer basically freezes after it gets into safe mode. Like it jus goes in to that greyish screen that says safe mode in the corner and it freezes there. i can't go to my desktop....
err...i really hope i don't have to reformat my computer....It's my life!

    Again, thank you so much...

Darn! It would have to be ME.

Well ya could probably use a Win98 boot disk, with "SCANREG.EXE" from win98 put on it, boot to that, and try to restore the ME registry on the C disk using 98's SCANREG. A bit "kludgey", but it could be done.
