[RESOLVED] DVD writers

hi, i really wan to get a dvd writer but i dont have a clue about them, can sum1 please tell me what all the stuff means please.

eg. dual layer and triple layer???

also what is the best make? i will be buyimg one off www.aria.co.uk, so could sum1 check them out and tell me what their opinion is please

I wouldn't bother with dual-layer just yet, it's very early days so the technology will probably improve a lot and the media is currently £10 per disc

Fairly new into DVD burning myself, I have just bought this one: Lite-On

Why?
- 12x speed
- mutliformat (was one of the key reasons)
- good brand name (also, Sony and Plextor in my book)

Not much else (such as the layer stuff) are worth looking at yet IMO. Kinda what SuperSparks said already.

I've had the LiteOn SOHW-812S 4x burner for several months now and am extremely happy with it. Upgraded the firmware at the LiteOn site(don't trust the 'unapproved' firmware offerings).
This thing will transcode(using Nero6)and burn a full movie at 4x in 20 to 25 minutes and that's good enough for me. Speed vs accuracy and accuracy wins out in my book.
There have been poor revue's from people using the 8x blanks.but they don't/won't say if they let the burner/software choose the safe burning speed or if they 'forced' it. I tend to have the opinion that it's best to wait until the dual layer has been standardized and given more time before I go that route. And,,especially until the medium prices come down from cyber space. I could care less about backing up all that 'leader'/'trailer' cr*p on my store bought DVD's anyway. Of course, 7+Gigs would sure be nice for storing files,I must say...

DVDR's r really expensive neway if u dont buy them from the right place, i.e. £5 from Argos

just a couple of links for pretty good sites you could get a dvd writer from http://www.planetmicro.co.uk and alsohttp://www.ebuyer.co.uk ebuyer is a more professional site and is also more expensive in my opinion but it is where i purchased my dvd writer from a few months ago, and it is good for the price and was about £60 = dvd r's@8x, rw's @4x and cd's @40x

p.s i would suggest getting a 8x or 12x but 12x discs arent out yet.

I've used ebuyer in the past without problems, but then I started hearing all the horror stories. This is why I wouldn't chance it again:

Ebuyer is a BIG no no, for me and for many others.

May be cheap, but they make up for that with their "Customer Service" and "Delivery Time"

in that case i would try planetmicro they are the slightly cheaper option and reasonably quick delivery on products also.

I've used Ebuyer 4 times over the last month, each order was delivered on or before the date given. Price wise they just can't be beat.

I know they are a pain when things go wrong but that's been my experience with all the on line suppliers I've used.

I will have a look at planetmicro though.
