Problem installing CDWriter on new Dell

I've tried both Dell and Freecom, and neither can help.
I have a new Dell Dimension 4600. Didn't get internal CD Writer because I already had an unused USB2 Freecom FX1. I have been trying for two weeks now to install it but it always eventually produces a "yellow nasty" in the Device Manager. Dell suggested that I cleared the NVRAM and reload the factory defaults, which I did and it was ok then for a day or two and the cd writer was working fine. Then Saturday it did it again: - first the screen froze on an application (this time I think it was RealOne player)- then I couldn't close the application, even with Task Manager, so I switched off at the box - when I switched on again it seemed as if it was trying to boot up on the CD Writer so I pulled the USB plug out and it booted up properly - but then the cd writer had a yellow nasty again. Repeated attempts at installation make no difference.

When I install it does it automatically using XP's native driver.

I know how to stop it trying to boot up on the USB - disable the USB emulation. I forgot to do that after clearing the NVRAM.

Anyway, I've just been through the NVRAM clearing again, but it's made no difference this time. Device Manager is showing error Code10. I've been told to look at MSKB "Troubleshooting Device Conflicts with Device Manager" but the Device Manager isn't indicating any conflicts and there is no Resources tab.

The only other USB device installed is a scanner.

I tried installing it on another pc, my old Win98 one, and it appeared to be ok.

I'm getting desparate. Dell won't support third party hardware although it was they who suggested clearing the NVRAM. Freecom don't know what to do. They are both new pieces of kit, I don't understand why they cannot be made to work together.

I do have Service Pack 1 installed. Not sure about the second part - do you mean upgrade? If so, well the Dell is only a couple of weeks old, shouldn't everything be the most up-to-date? The Freecom FX1 is several months old, although previously unused.

I've now had a reply from Freecom who say " This is bad news!
Our device is Plug n Play compliant, this means that it allows Windows to set the IRQ and memory addresses that it uses - so Windows has total control of these aspects! The only other thing that I can think of is to maybe update the computers BIOS to the latest version, and then check on the Intel website to see if there are any updated drivers for that USB chipset! " I've told them the same, that everything should be the most up-to-date.

I don't know if I made it clear in my original post, that twice I've had it working, but it's stayed installed for no more than a few hours. First the pc hangs and I have to switch off at the box and when I eventually get it going the device has effectively uninstalled and won't reinstall.

    USB Problem

You might try using the other USB port to be sure if the one your using is good or not. If your scanner works fine try using that port. I use one port for several things, just use a extended cable up to my dest top to plug in my Printer , Camera and card reader.

I think I've tried them all, front and back, there are eight altogether.

Is this a powered hub that you are using or is it drawing power from the BUS on the 4600? If the later, there is porbably not enough juice to drive the CD drive and everything else which means you will need a powered hub.
If a hub is not involved, you may need the USB 2.0 drivers for this device.

you have to find out if your motherboard has either an Intel, Via or Sis chipset in order to update your usb2.0 drivers. The drivers that are initially installed on your system are usually old and the maker of the chipsets have updated drivers.

    Hello,

I'm not sure if it's a powered hub or not, and I'm at work so cannot check. However it has USB2.

Not sure about the other things although I know the USB are Intel.

Just this minute, literally, had a response from Dell (wrote then another very another long email last night.) They have told me how to upgrade my chipsets and BIOS.

I'll see how that goes and get back to you.

Thanks for your advice to date, I'm very appreciative.

Yes that article is worth a look, thanks.

I haven't tried to install those upgrades yet but I was wondering if anybody had an opinion on this. Freecom asked me for some information about my USB's as shown in the Device Manager. Amongst other things I told Freecom that there was one line which was - Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. They came back to me with this - "That's interesting! The word "standard" should never appear in device manager, it indicates that the device isn't using the correct drivers, and that entry is for your USB 2 controller! If it isn't using the correct drivers it cannot function totally correctly! It should show a name - probably Intel like the others."

Is there anything in what Freecom have said?

Just a quick update for all those who helped me. I installed an upgrade for the usb chipset drivers and so far so good, the cd writer seems to be behaving properly, ie remaining installed.

    Thanks for all your help.
