HELP...Can not turn on RPC service

Recently I was working on a friends machine which I thought was hit by the blaster worm. I went into services.msc and turned off the RPC service to (in my mind) minimize any risks. I quickly learned that turning off the service also disables a whole host of other things, among them, dialup. So I went back into services.msc and attempted to turn RPC back on however it appears the screen flashes but I don't get the options box. When I attempt to close the services box it tells me I first must close any open services windows. The only way I can close the box is to end the mmc.exe process.

Any suggestions on how to turn RPC back on will greatly be appreciated. I've tried modifying the reg entry from (4) diabled I believe, to (2) automatic I think, but that doesn't work.

    Thanks.

Hi I take it you went to HKLM\system\current control set\services to set the DWORD value and have rebooted to no effect? I don't suppose your friend ever made a ERD if so run that to fix the problem. Short of that I think you may have to reinstall 2K over the top. Maybe someone else has a better solution so hang in there.

This is from the Black Vipers page for Win 2000:

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
This service is rather vital. Practically everything depends on this service to be running. This is also the only service that you should not (and will not) disable via the Services MMC. If you do, your computer may (will) become unbootable AND you cannot place this service back to automatic to fix it. Leave it on Automatic and do not change it. If, for whatever reason, the service became disabled and you can no longer boot your system, please read the information here for a way to fix it.

Thanks for Black Vipers website. The reg patch he had worked great. I don't know why me editing the exact same entry manually didn't work, but oh well, its working again. Lesson learned, leave RPC service ALONE, LOL

    Thanks all.
