Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools tab click DirectX Diagnostic Tool and you'll find your version of Direct X under the System tab probably the last line under the System Information section. XP comes with Direct X 8.1

An alternative is START/RUN "DXDIAG" which will open the diagnostic program for you.

Thanks very much for the replies. I have DirectX 8.1 and was wondering if I should get DirectX 9, if there any real benefits. I don't play many games.

If you read the MS update site you will see version 9b patches a security problem on all previous versions which can possibly allow access to your PC.

If you aren't having any problems with any games you do play I wouldn't bother updating your version of Direct X. This is only my opinion.
