Can't transfer pictures from my Nikon digital camera to my computer

I have a Nikon Coolpix 2000 digital camera After a recent hard drive reformat I had to reinstall the software, but unlike before the reformat, I can't transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer. I using Windows 98SE and IE6.

After I connect up the camera, Nikon View 5 will not detect it on the computer. If I press Transfer Image on the camera, I get 'Communications Error' in the camera monitor. If I try to launch Image Transfer from Nikon View 5, I get 'There is no CF card in the connected camera or the Card Reader.'

I've checked the camera and everything else is working fine.

I have also tried an uninstall/install of the software. I've looked around the Nikon sites and can't find anything relevant to my problem. Hoping to get some good advice here.

I had lots of trouble connecting my digital camera, but I solved all my problems by purchasing a USB card reader. This is like a mouse which simply sits on the desktop, and you insert the flash card and read it in. It shows up as another drive. It also saves a packet on battery power!

Make sure that the USB controller is enabled in BIOS, there are no problems with the USB controller in Device Manager, and the camera is listed in Dev. Mgr. under the USB controller.

If they're ok, then try a different USB port.

If no luck, then remove the camera from Dev. Mgr., uninstall the camera software, remove the camera from the USB port, and reinstall everything according to the instructions.

If still no good, then try a different USB cable.

Just a thought: I haven't fooled around with my Sony camcorder in a few months which also has a Memorystick for still shots. But I had to have it connected (and turned on I think) to the computer prior to turning on the computer from a cold boot. It is firewire but if you have USB or USB 2.0 it may be the same procedure. No charge to test it out! JC

Tried the second usb port but that didn't work either. I couldn't see the camera listed in Device Manager, is it supposed to be.
Anyway yesterday I took out the camera cable and uninstalled the Nikon View 5 software but in doing so accidently deleted some files (msoe.dll) and couldn't open Outlook Express.

Spent hours today trying to get it working, finally did so a short time ago by reinstalling OE6 Service Pack 1.

However I must have also deleted something called MM3DR.DLL because when I try to put a CD in the CD-Rom drive I am told the above file is missing. When I put in the Nikon View CD it won't run at all.

Somewhere down the road I must take Philip M's advice and buy a usb card reader.

But in the meantime I have to work out how to restore the MM3DR.DLL and maybe then have another go at getting the digital photos on the computer.

Please keep suggestions I could try coming in.

Have you tried this to make sure you do a complete uninstall of the Nikon View software: (Borrowed from Nikon site)

"How do I uninstall an older version of Nikon View?

    Question
How do I uninstall an older version of Nikon View?

    Answer
To uninstall Nikon View 4.x, 5.x or 6.x follow these instructions. For older versions contact Nikon Technical support for more in-depth information on the uninstall process.
    Removing Nikon View 4.x, 5.x or 6.x
From the "Start" menu select "Programs" -> "NikonView" -> "Uninstall". After the un-installation program has completed, you need to use a program called "Regsweeper" to clear the system registry.
This ReqSweeper program will complete the removal of the old software. Insert the original version of the Nikon View CD in your CD drive and quit the "Welcome" program if it runs automatically. Right click on the CD icon (found in the "My Computer" on your desktop) and select "Explore". This will display the CD contents. Follow the steps below:

    Open the "NkView" folder.
Copy the "Utility" folder by dragging it onto your desktop.
If you see only the "ENG" (English), "FRN" (French), "GER" (German) and "SPN" (Spanish) folders, open the appropriate folder for your language. Then copy the "Utility" folder by dragging it onto your desktop.
After copying the "Utility" folder, open it from your desktop.
You will see a program called "RegSweeper" inside the Utility folder
Double click the "RegSweeper" icon to run.
Confirm the message at the conclusion.
Please restart your computer before installing the new Nikon View version
If you are a Macintosh computer user, you do not need to uninstall prior to a new installation."

paisan thanks for this valuable information. I didn't know a thing about Regsweeper. If I sort out my MM3DR.DLL problem I will install Nikon View 5 and then uninstall using Regsweeper. Then when I reinstall again it just might work.

    What is life without hope.

Can you see your cd drives in Windows?

Can you explore the cd by using Windows Explorer?

What CD are putting in the drive that gives you the error message about mm3dr.dll file or is it more than one cd that causes this error message to come up?

Also, what is the exact error message you get when you see the error about mm3dr.dll?

ttodd, I'll make double-sure the usb cable is connected correctly to the camera once I manage to get the Nikon software installed. Thanks for this contribution.

paison, the mm3dr.dll problem seems to have mysteriously disappeared. Today I put loads of CDs, both music and programs in the drive to test it and they all ran and opened ok, all that is, except the Nikon View. After my last uninstallation of it, I cannot get it to run to reinstall, no matter what I do. It's a new CD, so there shouldn't be a problem with it.

When it failed to run, I went to Start, Run, and typed in D:/SETUP then got this message 'Cannot find the file D:/SETUP

I don't how to progress from here

Try D:\setup (assuming that the drive in which the CD is inserted is labeled D).
If that does not work, then the CD may be defective.

Ski, it is the D:/ drive and I've tried the D:/SETUP numerous times and all I get is 'Cannot find the file D:/SETUP'

I've just looked at the (D Properties box in My Computer, it gives this information: Type: CD-Rom Disk. File System: Fat.
Where it says: Label. the box is empty, there is a flashing cursor in there but it won't let me type anything. Is this how it should be?

P.S. Tomorrow I'll try to try to find someone with a computer and see if the Nikon CD will run there, then we'll know whether it's defective or not. It is only about 2 weeks since I bought it new and I'm the only person that's handled it. I would be amazed if it's defective.

You could get the Nikon View software from here:

    http://www.nikon-euro.com/nikoneuro2...ownload_11.htm

Not sure if the regsweeper program is included in the download as you might want to run that first before you try and reinstall the Nikon View software.

If you're typing the slash like this as shown in your posts -> D:/setup
then try typing the slash like this -> D:\setup

Or, insert the CD, right click on the D drive in Windows Explorer, click Explore, and double click on the 'setup.exe' file.
