new computer hangs at Intel screen

I just got my mother a new computer from googlegear.com. It came with an pent4 1.8 and 512 ram. I ordered and installed a western digital 40gb hd, and a cd-r/dvd combo.

I put in all the hardware, then started it up, installed xp.

Well it hangs at the Intel Pentium screen in the beginning of a boot for about 2 minutes. This happened the first time I started it up before installing XP.

could someone help me out here? she keeps asking "if its a new computer, why is it so slow at startup." This gift isnt working out too well so far...

    thanks

When you say "at the Intel pentium screen" - you mean where it states what type processor is installed and how fast if runs, how much memory..? But it does get past this point...eventually? Well, this phase does take it's time - but 2 minutes is a bit on the slow side..

That's about where the IDE detection phase is - might be problems with one of the devices (HDD/CD-RW-DVD). Can you see messages about all the installed devices - do they all show up?

no its not a black dos screen with text. its just a picture for the intel mobo. it just says intel with colors around it. it gets stuck here for about a minute, then it goes to a blank black screen with an underscore blinking in the top left, and gets stuck there for another minute... then its on to windows and runs great.

i wouldnt think anything is wrong with the drives, theyre all brand new... theres only a hd, cdrw/dvd, floppy. theyre all installed correctly.... someone in another forum said to flash my bios.. i dont know what that means, and they never responded back..

i would appreciate some more help

    thanks

Post the mobo maker and the model of the motherboard.
Also which cpu you are using..

Sure helps when you want to chase down the manual so you can be helped.

Have a look in the BIOS Setup and see if there's a "Fast boot" option, or something like that. If there is try enabling it.

OK, amother thing to try is to set the BIOS to "Optimised defaults". If it's set to "Performance options" it can sometimes cause problems - one of my PC's won't boot at all when set to performance. If it's still no good try "Fail-safe defaults".

May sound too simple,,but have you checked BIOS to be sure boot sequence is correct? Also, double check jumpers on drives to be sure CD drive is not set as master if on same ribbon as HHD...
    Stupid question? No such thing!

SuperSparks: i looked long and hard in the bios and there are no settings that look anything similar to the ones youre talking about. =\

My HD is on the ribbon going to primary IDE on the mobo

My cd-r/dvd is on the ribbon going to secondary IDE on the mobo.

that is how it should be correct? They are both set to master

I turned off silent boot in bios (turns off the intel screen and shows the text at boot), and it some info about the system and the

    Legacy Keyboard..... Detected
    Legacy Mouse.......... Detected
    USB Legacy.............. Enabled

then it sits there for about 1 minute.. then on to the underscore...

I think I would be on the phone about now. To me that seems like a bad BIOS to me.

Are both your IDE cables 40pin/80wire? Not neccessary for the CD drive, but should be for HHD to take advantage of ATA66/100 feature. If all your power plugs are also ok,then i'd go along with Trains suggestion and do all you can to have them make it right...
