QUICK SHUTDOWN:
http://www.winutility.com/qsd/
Quick ShutDown™ - fast and easy-to-use shutdown tool that allows you to shutdown, reboot, hibernate, logoff, standby or lock your computer with the one mouse click. When QSD is running, an accurate miniature icon appears on the taskbar on the end opposite the "Start" button. You can choose to click or double click it with the left mouse button, and it shutdowns or reboots your computer. You can set a keyboard shortcut for any action - shutdown, reboot, hibernate, standby, lock, logoff and media eject. Quick ShutDown allows you to set your own tray icon to be displayed. Click it with the right mouse button to view the context menu. Also, QSD can automatically terminate applications if they are not responding making shutdowns both quicker and safer. In addition, Quick ShutDown can eject removable media drives at shutdown preventing you from losing your disks and CDs by leaving them in the drive when you leave.
WEBKEY:
http://webkey.virtualave.net/webkey.html
WebKey2000 allows you to visit your favorite websites at the touch of a keyboard button. With one-touch access, you can also launch your default email client using an email template, execute any applications (even with shortcuts), open any registered documents, and a whole lot more. With the new features added to version 1.2, WebKey2000 can be an extremely useful utility. Now you can do things such as hide or show a series of active windows on your desktop, execute an action command from the clipboard buffer, and open a default browser with an url using the existing opened window. WebKey2000 has a very nice GUI interface to let you define a hotkey and the action associated with it. Using modifiers like Ctrl, Alt and Shift, you can specify a variety of hotkeys and duplicate entries will be detected. The program runs as a convenient icon in the system-tray area of the windows taskbar and can automatically run at windows startup. A context menu can easily be accessed from this tray-icon to allow you to enable or disable all the hotkeys quickly. This simple freeware program is easy to use and could be a great time-saver if you have a handful of websites that you frequently visit, program or files that you constantly open, or even friends that you often send emails to.
AD-AWARE:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/fil...id,7423,00.asp
spyware with the latest version of this free tool. Ad-aware scans your system--including removable drives--for the most common types of advertising spyware and safely removes offending software. The program works through intuitively designed wizards. Currently, the utility detects small ad programs from Adware, Aureate/Radiate, OnFlow, Comet-Cursor, Cydoor, Doubleclick, EverAd, Flyswat, OnFlow, TimeSink 5.0, and others.
Version 6.0 offers improvements (like a redesigned user interface) and safeguards for users who may be overzealous in removing adware/spyware components. Because many ad-supported programs won't function if you remove their ad modules, you may occasionally want to overrule an earlier decision to remove one of these components. Version 6.0 addresses this problem in two ways: It stores adware components in your Recycle Bin, where you can later retrieve them; and it provides a backup archive viewer for reviewing--and if necessary, restoring--components you've removed

EARLE:
Perhaps an alternate, and easier, way of hiding your desktop icons is to get this freebie from an Australian company:
http://www.coolbananas.com.au/prod2.htm
I have used it for a couple of years and it does an easy job. I do not let it check for emails.
Many thanks for your interesting inputs here. Have a couple saved already!!

Better late than never, maybe some other stragglers will stumble onto this and find the info usefull.
These two "little" jewels that I am going to document, would be of most benefit primarily to those that work at a computer a lot and have to keep track of a lot of tasks, things to do, and so on... Both of these do that, but one is a repository for less volatile info that can be "put away" for a while, and the other is for quick, easily accessible, highly volatile notes.
The latter component, for quick and easy use, is a nifty little freeware package called "ATNotes". Yeh, it is basically one of those "sticky notes" programs, but it is what I would consider "best of breed" and so much more powerful yet easier to use than the rest, that you can hit a control key, make a note, and the rest you kind of have to experience to understand (I've only got so much room here...).
From there, it is sometimes necessary to archive notes, basically offloading them from the screen to a "database", and for that I use "TreeDBNotes". Again, too much to go into the benefits here, you kind of have to shake it down to see the potential (don't let the initial display of the interface perplex you, it is really quite easy to use once you get the concept).
'Nuff said...
Well, having said that, I have to throw in a reccomendation to check out "Desktop Sidebar", but it requires XP or 2k and Outlook (not Outlook EXPRESS, just Outlook, as in Outlook XP or Outllook 2000). I actually went to the trouble to migrate from OE6 to Outlook 2000 just to be able to get this hummer goin. A caution if you do try it out: it initially docks at the righthand side of the screen (can be changed to, and is better at, the lefthand side of the screen (better because it can be set to "hide" and tends to jump out with most of the cursor activity occurring on the right side...)), and if you have any meticulously arranged desktop icons, the sidebar will unmercilessly scatter the icons all over the screen, even with something like FavOrg that supposedly locks icons in place.
