Windows Explorer Extremely Slow to Open JPEG Folders
(This thread is originated from this thread.)
On my data drive I have mostly (99%) folders of images files. Half of them are TIFF files and half of them are JPEG files. The TIFF files are typically much bigger than the JPEG files.
The strangest thing is that Windows Explorer seems to operate at normal speed when accessing the folders with the large TIFF files but slow to a crwal when accessing the folders with the smaller JPEG files!
Any idea?

Do things speed up to normal when you disable the preview pane and set the view mode to list or anything without a preview?
I think the logic for this is that explorer has to do more work to uncompress .jpg than .tiff for thumbnails. The nature of the compression in .jpg files does not lend itself to partial decompression, but .tiff files are typically 'interlaced', meaning that opening the first half or even quarter of the file will provide enough information to create a preview. jpg files not only need to be resized, they also need to be uncompressed completely, so the thumbnailing operation will need lots of RAM compared with tiff.

Nope! All the folders are in "list."

Do you have a large, "My Documents" folder? If so, it may be worth the experiment of moving the files within it to a new root folder?

Hope this helps.

Hiya, Daizy. Long time no see.
I heard about that for Win9x systems. But, no. I usually don't put anything in "My Document" at all (well, may be a few .doc files in there.)
