BootMagic Error
Problem Description:
Error finding BTMagic.img
Error message displayed on boot up
Problem Environment:
BootMagic
Cause(s) of the problem
BootMagic is no longer installed on the system, but the flag in the master boot record still exists.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above 3 paragraphs is taken directly from the mfg's homepage.
I am running a Pent II machine with two OS's, both Win98, on 2 separate HD's. My wife and I wish to use bootmagic and boot into our own OS separate from the kids.
After installing Bootmagic, both OS's display in the BootMagic configuration screen. I chose the default then saved and exitied.
Upon bootup I receive the error message "Error finding BTMagic.img" "Run BootMagic Install", and I have to press any key to boot the active drive.
1) Why do I receive this error when BootMagic is installed on my system?
2) I set one HD to master and the second one to slave. Is this OK? The second HD was the original HD that came with the computer.
Thanks in advance.

I recommend making a BootMagic boot disk and uninstalling the program from your machine. The reason being if the OS where BM is installed for some reason won't boot, and it's set to boot to that OS, you won't be able to override the BM setting even with the boot disk. That happened to me and I had to reinstall that OS.
After that experience I'll only use the boot disk to choose the OS.
I know this isn't an answer to your question, just thought I'd throw it out.

BM Error
DVOM,
I did make a disk. After I uninstalled BM and booted with my disk, it only showed one of my 2 OS's. Go figure.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Any other help out there?

The way your hard drives are setup shouldn't be a problem... they are both primary partitions right?
i totally agree with DVOM in that i only use the boot disk too and never install the program on the hardDrive, (BTW: same goes for partition magic too, i use boot disk only)...
when u now boot with this disk are u still getting the boot magic screen with the blue background or just a text based screen?
it should be completly text based offering u only to press a number relating to the OS u want... if u'r still getting the blue background then this is indicating that Boot Magic in not completly removed.
Regards

Sounds like you need to run the BM configurator and add your second OS. Since it is on a second hard drive you will need to enable the "Advanced Partition Hiding" option (under Options) so that BM can see an deal with the OS on the second drive (the option is not enabled by default).

DR MDJ,
I did what you stated and the problem still exists.
LotusAstra - Yes, both HD's are set to active Primary.
I'm really confused, I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times with the exact same thing taking place each time.

Another question for all....
Can't I place this file called "BTMagic.img" in a special directory or a special place on the root drive, so it can find it upon bootup?
Just thought I'd help a little.

Sorry, did't realize the problem was still a missing btmagic.img.
Yes, put the btmagic.img file (which is used to produce the bootmagic boot menu screen) in the main boot magic directory.

DR MDJ,
The file "BTMagic.img" is already in the main boot magic directory, yet upon startup it can not be found.

OK, follow these steps from Powerquest (note the warning if a disk overlay or disk compression is being used). These steps will reset the boot record on the primary drive to the way it was before BM was installed. After doing this start from scratch and reinstall Boot Magic.

Thanks to all that helped!
DrMDJ,
Thank you very much. My system is now working wonderful.
The first statement from PowerQuest using the Win98 startup disk did not help, but using the second involving the BootMagic rescue disk did the trick.
I thank all for the help and once again, thanks DrMDJ.
I hope to return the favor one day.

BootMagic Error Resolution
The "BTMagic.img" is written on the master boot record of your computer. The fix is to boot your computer with the Windows install CD and go into the recovery console 'R' and from there you have to pick the Main drive from the list it will be listed by a number. Just type in the corresponding number and then you have to enter the administrator password (Hope you remembered it!)
Then you run the command FIXMBR and that should fix it. If your system is dual boot this will take that away. Sorry. But it will remove the BOOTMAGIC issue listed.
