Cleaning up Windows
My "Windows" folder is almost 300MB...Is this normal???There has to be alot of things in there that are not needed...Anyone got any tips on getting rid of any of the useless stuff...I've heard of a program that can tell you what files are on your computer that haven't been used in a long time but there has to be some common things to look for to delete...Thanks for any help with this...

My Windows folder contains 253 megs, but I've
installed an unreal number of software packages over the last year the this win95 config and hdisk has seen three different computers. Some folders you can clean out are:
Downloaded Program Files (if you have IE)
Temporary Internet Files (It's best to clean this out from within IE)
Temp (Do this one first)
You can also use one of many utilities intended to cleanout your machine. Norton just added Cleansweep to it's Utilities Suite. Between Windoctor and Cleansweep you should be able to shave the directory size down some. (From one who has hosed systems before be careful! and especially take to heart the yellow and red warning signs in Cleansweep if you decide to use it)

Mine shows 64MB.. Clean out your temporary internet file folder and temp folder under the windows folder... see if this helps.

Close all programs, delete ALL
*.tmp and ~*.*
files from your entire hard drive. Deleting files in the Temp directory is nice, but not all programs put temp files there!
Oh, and mines 404MB, but you wouldn't believe the software I'm running--two versions of Office Professional, Wordperfect, CorelDraw, Lotus Notes and 1-2-3, CC Mail, Pagemaker, Front Page, Peachtree and One-Write Plus, Publisher, and bunches of VBA training files. Yuk!

The biggest HOG in the windows folder are the HLP and AVI files. If you don't want, already seen the AVI (Video Files) Delete them. There are over 90 HLP files loaded by windows, look at each one do you really need., i.e Exchange (do you use Exchange Mail).
Got ya all beat mine is 28.9MB
