Unhappy Driver Power State Failure when restarting PC

    Hello,

I've searched the whole windows 2000 thread for this problem, but on neither of them someone replied, So I hope this time someone will reply with a solution for this problem.

Everytime we shutdown or restart a windows 2000 machine, we get the error message "Driver Power State Failure" in a blue screen, then it starts with a memory dump.

I checked Microsoft Technet for this issue, and the only thinkable suggestion was to remove third party software or try to upgrade the BIOS. We tried upgrading the Bios (dell desktop), but still the same problem. This machine has been upgraded from windows NT 4.0 to windows 2000.
Also newest service pack is applied. We tried to remove Pcanywhere, Norton antivirus (also removed all keys in the registry manually), disabling power management APM no success at all.

Anyone has anyidea what's going on? Or have a solution we could try to solve this problem?

    Thanks in advance,

Maybe a driver from the NT days not compartible with W2K...? Never did like upgrades...much prefer clean installations..

    Thumbs down

Jenae that is not very helpfull, I already found that technet artical, as I said before already read all technet articals about it. It's just bull** (sorry about that) what they tell there, knowing microsoft long enough, it will end up in a clean re-install of windows 2000 I guess.

Just thought someone might now exactly what to do with this... So re-install it is, always the best solution

Anyways, thanks all for the quick replies.

Yup, another fine quality about M$: they make some fine, general error codes that can mean just about anything...

Does the floppy have a ! in device manager?
It would be a great pleasure to know I have helped you, and that the fix worked and might help others. You might help me by posting which linux distro, version, and desktop manager you use. Have a most excellent day, dude/ette.

    Cool

Thanks again for all the help, but it's like seeking a needle in a haystack. You just don't know what software or driver causes the problem, and taking the time to look for the faulty driver and solve the problem, takes more time than just doing a rebuild. Time cost money

Does this unit have a tape drive in it? The reason I ask is that I ran into this last week, and it turned out the office "expert" had reloaded the tape software, but used a version meant for NT4. Removing it cleared up the error. Also, even though you removed PCAnywhere and NAV you could still have an offending driver tucked away somewhere.

No, it's a simple desktop. Only cdrom etc. Yeah, ofcourse there is still some kind of offending driver, orelse it was solved by removing nav and pcanywhere. Anyway thanks, PC is already rebuilded as discussed before, so no worries

Installed 2000 last week myself and got the same problem.
I went through each and every driver and finally the message disappeared - but only to be replaced with a blank screen with a blinking cursor at the top left. If I then press on/off for the 4 seconds the computer will shut down for 10 minutes and the power on by itself. Pressing reset before shutting it down leaves it turned off.
I do believe it to be a BIOS problem, but haven't had the time to check for upgrades.
On a DELL GX1 I get the message that it is now safe to turn off the maching.
