Windows XP internet connection problems: "Error 718 ..."

I have a small LAN with machines running both Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Pro. I am having trouble making my internet connection on the Windows XP machine. When I try to hook up, I get an error message:

"Error 718: ... Remote computer did not respond in a timely manner ..."

Are there some new settings on the Windows XP Pro computer that I am missing?

I'd guess you'd have to say how you're hooked up to the internet
    through a router and broadband?
or through another system on the network.

and then what is all effected is this just an internet problem?

if you connected with a router and the whole network isn't working from XP

the first thing I'd guess to check is your ip address
right click on the My Network Places Icon on the desktop.

then click on Local Area Connection
then click on the support tab
and see if the ip address is what it's suppose to be.

some odd reason I had my IP address change a few times
I have no Idea how or why
since my router is suppose to assigns the ip address

I ended up restoring my system registry file
as I couldn't find another easy way to fix it
    the repair didn't work
I have a feeling it was some software that got loaded.

if your ip address is wrong and repair doesn't help you might want to post back.
someone might have an easy solution

I am hooking up directly to the internet from this machine, although the system is on a LAN. I'd like to try using this machine for Internet Connection Sharing.

My IP addresses are OK. The TCP/IP settings for the LAN have nothing to do with the TCP/IP settings for the Internet PPP Connection. There are two different settings for the two different hardware connections. The idea would be the same if you had two Network Interface Cards instead of the usual one for a Local Area Network.

I am going to make sure my password is OK, although I don't think that is it.
