CD? CD-RW conflict
I have an older IBM laptop (760 EL) and it will not read the CD's that I create on my desktop CD -RW. It is a 20X cd in a swappable drive bay. I would like to use the laptop for powerpoint presentations. Any ideas?

Are you trying to read CD-RW discs in the IBM, or CD-R? Some older CD drives may have trouble with CD-RW discs.

I suggest you try it with a CD-R.

and set your software to close the cd, not the session.
it will work if you do that with a cd-r.
However you loose the ability to write to the disk.
just a limitation of the older hardware. and it's hit or miss too, because some older cd-drives can read cd-rw's just fine.
it's just a jump to the left....

There is no requirement to close a disc. As long as the last session is closed, which every data burning software package will do, the disc will be readable.
My IBM laptop performs in a similar fashion. It reads write-once media, but not erasable. No amount of magical incantations will fix that.

see if installing a udf reader for your cdrom helps.

You are correct there is no "requirement" to close the cd, and you are correct that many older drives won't read cd-rw's at all. I was speaking to cd-r's.
But if a cd-rom drive reads standard cd's and won't read burned cd-r's, it's a good bet that it will; if you close the disk.
Years ago with my old 1x cd-r burner (before there was such a thing as a cd-rw, or at least before it was in practical use) Closing the cd was the only way to get any other cd-rom drive in the office to read the burned cd's.
But magical incantations may help if you take the blue pill.
it's just a jump to the left....

How are you writing the CDRWs? Are you using drag & drop (packet writing), or conventional burning software?
If you're using packet writing (DirectCD or InCD), you will need UDF reader software, as Chorro suggested.
