Yes, a router will allow you to share your single connection to the Internet, (i.e., your single, ISP-assigned IP Address), among several of your internet-capable devices.
Most routers provide:- IP Address Routing
- Network Address Translation (NAT)
- LAN connectivity like a Network switch
- DHCP functions
- And last but not least, Firewall functions
Note also that most routers use internally-stored firmware, which means they can usually be used with most any Operating System.
