To open a new link in a new window I hold the shift key down and click on the link. And you can do the same thing in the new windows you have open

Do you have any toolbars installed?
These could very well be the culprit to this problem.
Especially older versions of Yahoo toolbar.
A handy tool to see what toolbars or bho's you have installed is BHODemon
It lets you enable and disable toolbars and bho's.
Try disabling toolbars or bho's (if any). See if that cures it.

I have tried and tried many things, including all of the above......until it gets fixed, I'm using firefox!! So far I like it.

Internet.
