Ok did that. left it shutdown for about 1/2 an hour. No help, still just one window at a time.
HP Pavilion a257c running Windows XP Home SP2, 17" LCD Thin Film Transistor Display, Pentium 4 / 2.66 GHz, 512 RAM, 120GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive - 5400 rpm, 4X DVD+R/+RW and 16XDVD, 1.44 Floppy, nVidia GeForce MX-440 NV18 Graphics, 8x AGP card, HP multimedia keyboard, HP optical scroller mouse, High Speed V.90 data/fax, HughesNet DW7000 Sat. Internet.

You probably have a broken entry in file associations.
Running the following commands from start > run will restore it.
Run each line individually. After each run, you should see a message DllRegisterServer succeeded.
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
(This *could* also restore your backbutton)

That is one of the fixes I had tried and didn't work. But I didn't shut down computer after doing those fixes, so remember to shut down computer after trying them.
