    Unwanted sound at start up

    I've recently purchased a Sony VAIO FJ170. It comes with XP Home and I'm using Verizon DSL.

    I've managed to remove all sounds related to actions, but I still have the normal sound on start up. I've done everything I can even muting the speakers. What will get rid of this annoying, and very loud start up sound?

    start>control panel>sounds and audio devices>sounds tab>start windows is listed in the program events panel. None is the option at the top.

    Ok, tried that, and restarted to see if it worked.

    Unfortunately, this sound still plays when the VAIO logo appears on the screen. I didn't have this much trouble doing this on my old VAIO laptop. What could have changed so much to make this such a pain?

    The VAIO logo appears before the windows logo? That would be happening as a BIOS setting, then. There should be a key you can press on startup to go into BIOS settings. Sometimes it's DEL or f2 or something like that. It might say on the startup screen or you may have to check your documentation. You should be able to find the option in that menu.

    Ok, accessed BIOS, and the only sound-related setting I could change was the default speaker volume, which I set to "0". It took care of the sound, but it muted the speakers so I wouldn't have any sounds at all. Is there any other way?

    Hmmm I would think that somewhere in the BIOS is a setting to control the startup sound. I've actually never heard of a startup sound in the BIOS, but it doesn't seem any stranger than the splash screens (which are relatively new, anyway). I would check your documentation.

    Pretty much the only documents that came with it are the safety information and accessories booklet unfortunately.

    I deleted all the sound clips in the Media folder and that fixed it.

    On my old laptop I replaced a few sound clips with some Family Guy sound clips, and I was planning on doing it with this one too, so this works out great.
