I would also suggest mepis or knoppix as a starter distro. Although having used suse, I gotta say thats pretty good too. Has a windows-like "control-panel"

Unix web servers are generally not much different.
the main difference is ASP, the windows web server will run asp script or asp.net whereas a unix webserver wont.Unix has more Perl capabilities...

Linux use SAMBA to communicate with Windows shares, I use a program called smb4k - has a GUI for mapping shares and will allow you to create permanent shares easily etc.
