Could it be also launching itself when you start Outlook for your e-mails. It is set as a default to start messenger when Outlook is opened. It can be disabled in the options tab of outlook.

Just my two pence worth but I've used AVG Free edition ever since I've been on the internet and it has never let me down yet. I would highly recommend it for a look at least. :D
