Mac does require passwords. And the mac OS is Unix based just like Linux. And the cpu's are slower for the given price range you listed.

Basically those are gamer laptops and yes they are spendy.
Heck any computer stuff we buy is outdate even before we buy it.

i5, 8 GB ram and a external 1 TB drive. Whether a 128 or larger SSD.
i5 looks to be 10 - 20% faster from what I have found.

I do BETA testing of new OS,s and my feed back has helped developers.
Now that Win 10 BETA is no more, I am working with a couple Linux distros.
By using different hardware, I usually catch wifi...

E6420 would probably be my choice. 8 GB of ram is more than plenty. Well for most of us anyway.

Does your monitor have a HDMI port? As most new laptops have just that. But a VGA to HDMI adapters are available.
What price range are you thinking of???

But, 90+% of the time I use linux. But some programs are only written for windows.
