I still do not know what it was but... I added FinePix Viewer to the Start menu - now I have the icon and A805 is listed in Devices!

I'd try running a cleaning disk on those drives--Radio Shack or a Music store will have one.

IOW, MSE is all-in-one. I used to use free Avast but on both PCs it malfunctioned, so I upgraded to Pro version in new Win7 and replaced it with AVG in WinXP. I'll follow your advice and replace it...
