Welshjim mentioned IrfanView (the best freeware image browser). It will open images regardless of any mislabelling and ask if you want to rename to the correct format. If that does not work, you...

There aren't "copy" versions of XP. You would have to buy the full version. Apart from being illegal, a "copy" of XP won't allow you to get updates so there would be a high risk of being hacked...

Thanks for the prog ref. I've downloaded and will give it a try next printing, when the black ink is bound to be clogged.

That's got to be the longest list of RUN commands I've seen in a while. Any self-respecting virus would send itself somewhere else rather than wait for your progs to load!

Nix, I think you got it about right. Cd-r and Cd-rw are treated the same by the burning operation for closed and multi-sesson but cd-rw can be erased and burned anew.
I erroneously put WMP...

JBH1876, I would definitely use something other than WMP to burn disks. Far more flexibility and WMP can't do dvds. If you are serious, Nero is probably the best but payware. A lot of dvd...

That's quite interesting info particularly how many services that may be under one svchost. Again it's not in a very convenient form. Not the sort of thing you can monitor in realtime without a lot...

You're right that Process Explorer shows details. I already have it installed and did not think to check it out. Just ran it. Problem is the presentation is either too general (Process list) or...

I know what svchosts do but I find it very disturbing that you don't know what is actually going on. There are usually multiple instances running and one assumes they are running for a reason. I...

An update. What I found in that posted link about the registry is what I was looking for. However, the descriptions of the bits/bytes do not tally with what I find so I have not made any changes. ...

Firefox has been the main benefactor of anti-MS sentiment until now. I'm sure some hackers will attack anything but many have an anti-establishment bias.
What bothers me with FF is extensions and...

I echo Welshjim's ending comment about accuracy. OCR is not perfect and you can spend a lot of time making corrections to both text and layout. If the images have poor quality text, it may be...

I think I may have found a key to resolving what's going on. As it is clear that this is a designed Windows setup rather than some software glitch, I Googled "xp default file type cannot be changed"...

The entry is already per your description minus the MOVIE. What does that do? I have left as it is for now and just made it the default. I don't have any autoruns enabled so if that comes into...

When I went through reviews of AV software I don't think I found any two review sites that had the same two brands in the the top 5. A brand that was #1 on one site did not even make the top ten on...

Can you guarantee I won't have any trouble with other AV software? NAV is the IE of the AV world. Used by millions and despite esoteric criticism works fine for 99.99% of users.
NAV has been...

Puterfixer, I basically did what you said but without editing the registry. I removed .mpg in Folder Options/File Types and then created a new type .MPG. The entry for .MPG in the registry classes...

That might work were it not for the fact there is no Advanced option! On that jpg, I cropped the bottom of the dialog so you can't see the fact the only other button is "Restore" (back to ATi). ...

I don't usually post problems that are easy to solve because if they are, I've already solved them!
In this example, ATi is quite irrelevant. If I double click an mpg, it opens with PowerDVD.

Welshjim, re-read my first line, I tried to be specific. I am not talking about the default application. Doing that does not affect the File Type description.

SuperSparks, what is bad about the Epson C86 is that you cannot selectively clean a nozzle. Clean one, clean all four. My older Epson did it per colour I think. I did not have a clogging problem...
