Man is that gorgeous! Out of my range though. Eventually, the prices will get there for me... (around the same time I update this laptop -- which will then be maybe 30 years old) with Windows 20)!...

Nice! Not much newer than mine. Running Linux?
How much RAM? I do wish I could shove another couple GB ram in this thing but it maxes out at 2GB, but I am shocked how well it does with only 2GB...

I'm betting you are right. But the laptop is about 10 years old. Still, your comment makes sense and gives me more confidence. I hope!
Yeah, I know 2.0 is slow compared to the newer...

Thank you, that's a lot of good info. I won't be using the external drive as a boot drive, just to store backups of my laptop drive.
I know that Windows 7 can handle 2,3 or 4 TB drives with no...

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop from around 2006/2007 running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate SP1 with 2GB (maxed out) RAM. Works great!
I am looking to purchase a new external backup drive and my...

WOOHOO! Just ordered a Samsung 250GB SSD (smokin' fast!) for $70 ! At that price, no point in getting a 120.
This thing is supposed to be able to live for 5 years with 40gb of writes daily! ...

True, but then I would have to physically swap drives to access XP. I'd prefer being able to just mount the old (booted) XP virtually if that is possible. Then I could even store the container on...

Wow! That's massively interesting Train. I never would have imagined that even with a SSD Win 10 could run decently at 64 bit with only 2gb of RAM. Your experience may have well tipped the scales...

Oh you Linux guys! Always looking for another convert. Hee hee. I can definitely see the draw. Just may take a look at the links, but ATM I don't think it's in the cards for me. If Windows 11...

Great advice and great info. I think you are probably right that 2gb may be maxed out. But, maybe they didn't have 2gb per stick DDR2s back then and now they do. So maybe they would work. I know,...

Hmmmmm... I'm pretty sure I checked and this laptop can take 4gb although it came with 2. But I will take a better look soon.
In the link to the specs above it says
"Max Supported Size 2 GB"...

Have not looked at the links yet, but that has to be the most outrageous thing I have ever heard in the history of computing! An entirely different operating system is pushed onto your machine...

Sorry, meant to post that before. It's an Inspiron 6400.

Thank you for your response too. Yes, I am aware of the potential driver problem. It's a Dell that is at least 8 years old. Right now it is rocking Windows XP perfectly and I don't even want to...

Thank you for responding. Questions if you have time to answer:
1. Is the Win 10 on the Dell 64 bit or 32 bit?
2. Do you mean that if you have Win 8.1 on a computer, that along with the...

I've decided to upgrade an older laptop I have. It only has 2gb RAM, but can upgrade to 4gb.
I know a little bit about the technical memory addressing limitations of a 32 bit versus 64 bit OS,...

Thanks again! Yes, you are definitely right, a backup of the data is the thing to have. But I also want to keep a backup of the MBR even though there is only a remote chance that it may work to...

Thank you to all for the great info! :D
I have a few specific questions...
1. Is the "partition table" part of the MBR so that if the MBR is backed up, so is the partition table?
2. Are...

Wow! I have not used this forum in years. So glad it's still around!!! :)
I am partitioning a 1TB external HDD to use for backup. This isn't going to be a system drive, it's only used to store...

I used Erunt years ago too. It's fine for what it does. But its apples and oranges isn't it? Erunt just backs up the registry. That's not the same as what System Restore is (supposed) to do.

A bit unreliable might be an understatement. What the heck is it when you have a dozen restore points, all neatly displayed with nice notes on what each one is for, and not a single one works. It's...

In all the years I have been using XP, I have never once successfully used System Restore to reslove anything even though I have tried a number of times on a number of completely different computers....

Is it possible to change the location of fax cover pages in the XP faxing feature to a user specified location?
You can set the location of the faxes themselves, but it seems to only read fax...

Thank you all. Everyone has offered some excellent information.
I have not yet tried restoring the registry, and although I agree that that is not an ideal thing to do because of synchronization...
