Having now had time to do more research it seems that NS Nav & Messenger are lumped together whereas IE and Outook are not - that's why no bing etc!!
I have downloaded a neat little mail checker now...

If I'm in outlook and mail comes in I get icon & bing.
If I'm in Netscape (4.7) and mail comes in I get icon and bing.
If I'm in IE - NO icon , NO bing!
