aha, supper was goot!!

open the diskmanagement window, open help from the tool bar there,
open manage basic volumes there.

it tells how to do disk partiitons from the command line

i respect your knowlodge, but in disk managment one can resize without data loss.
i just did 3 xp disks to day.
160 gig xp
2 120 gig sata.

i resized all 3 in disk management without data loss

booting with the xp cd. to the screen where the c: drive is listed, should give you the option to make a partition,

or go into disk management and extend the partition there.

boot with xp disk, all the way to the page where the c: partition is listed.
press 'r' for repair.
xp will recover all damaged files/boot records and such.
no data will be lost.
should fix it

reboot back to windows, make sure the right driver is installed from there

in my 10 years at this computer repair, i've changed a jillion modems out, cause they been bit by power surges or power drops. the folks that use battery backups in their systems, run the tele line...

some externals are usb powered.
but not real good stuff.
the robotics connect to one of the 9 pin comports, right under the

i replace those cheapo modems every day.
get an external robotics.
they are stout modems, never seen a power surge/drop ever...

replace the modem. one of the small diodes has been scorched somehow.

click set up xp press enter.

it look at your disk.
then the page with the c; listed will come up.
hit 'r' there

you hit 'r' one page too soon.

get to the page that lists the c: drive/fat32ntfs/space in drive etc.

the option to repair/format is at the top of the page.

hit that 'r'

boot with a xp install disk.
after files load, get to the page where the c: drive is listed.

hit 'r'
that will do a full system recovery without losing your data
