More than likely you have a virus or some type of malware. Try the SuperAntiSpyware program I mentioned earlier, it is just one quick thing to try.

Now have a blank Desktop (only wallpaper) in Normal and Safe Mode.

1)Rerun an up-to-date virus scan and a spyware scan.
I would recommend the free version of SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot.Ad-Aware,etc.
Dl it, install it, update it and then run it in Complete Scan Mode....

Your Ghost copies of Win98SE made with 512MB of ram probably did not contain the MaxFileCache=512000 in the [Vcache] section of System.ini.

Perhaps you could try disabling all your antivirus for a short trial. Make sure you know that your emails are safe and then try it.
