Resetting BIOS to default settings changes the disk type to AHCI or similar.
I'll confirm this once home this evening and I'll certainly run the manufacturers
diags...

A new battery hasn't been tried although I did unplug the battery pack and try booting without it that made no difference.
When booted the system boots up with the acer logo and then tries loading...

Use defraggler which is produced by piriform who produce ccleaner.
Found instances where the standard defrag has left loads of defragmented files but defraggler has completely tidied up the system.

Thanks Fink ... Once I've stabilised the system how I like on Win7 I'll certainly make a copy of the system as I did with my xp machine .... Have a copy of Acronis 9 which works well.
