Yep, I switched the USB plug from the hub to the PC front panel port, still didn't work. But plugging into the back of the PC (the mobo USB ports), both the mouse and the keyboard are now working.

The mouse receiver was originally plugged into a 4-port USB hub, which was in turn plugged into a 7-port hub. Yes, not good -- so it is now plugged into the 7-port hub, which is plugged into the USB...
