Your problem is caused by a recent update from Microsoft. The fix involves a registry edit, but it's pretty quick & painless. Instructions are at this Knowledge Base article.

If you'll do a registry search for ShowMenuDelay, there's several instances - change the value to around 3 or 4. I think that's what you're looking for.

Yes, it'll 'disconnect' things temporarily, but no concern - hardware has improved dramatically over the last few years. :) The router does its own DHCP, when you plug everything up & turn everything...

Fink's right - Charter often pings their modems, just to be on the proactive side of things. Nothing to worry over.
If you'd rather not bother with a router, by all means don't. If there's no need...

I'd forget the CD. Install the chipset drivers & all updates from here. Uninstall all instances of Spybot S&D and reinstall fresh. Uninstall Norton (here's a little help) and do as fink suggested....
