Besides I checked and in boot/advanced "maximum memory" was already unticked. Remember I'm talking about 32 bit Windows, not 64 bit windows.

It took only a few minutes with 2 reboots. The new drive was not bootable and Vista stopped seeing it. I had to reformat it through administrative tools. I guess I'll try again.
