Don't forget their is proprietary info that Compaq puts on the HD. Without it you don't come up as I recall. A rescue disk if you made one would have that info on it.

And sometimes a simple reinstall will do the trick. If you have more than one firewall there can be a conflict.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your DSL router etc? Sometimes an installation will not install 100% and you have to reinstall one or more times. :)
