You mentioned having 600MB left on your drive. Your pagefile takes up room also.
You might try booting in "Safe" mode and removing some un-necessary files to get some breathing room...

With XP you can't uninstall drivers that are in use. It's best to uninstall drivers in safe mode.
(hold F8 key during boot... Choose safe mode... )

Ok. Well Before voptxp, WXP defrag always placed the pagefile, no matter if I set to 128MB or 1024MB, always in the middle of the drive between data.

I disagree. It sure as hell wasn't the XP defrag that all of the sudden, out of the blue, decided to optimize the page file to the front of the disk!
