The problem turned out to be that there was a plastic adapter over the pins on the old hard drive that I needed to remove and install on the new drive. Once I did that all is working fine.

Actually my cd rom is first in my boot order. That's my concern, I think that with the cdrom first in the boot order the computer should boot from the cd with a bad hard drive, or even with no hard...

No, it only goes to the blank screen, none of the usual F8 options. Strange though that when I get to the boot menu and select the hard drive it will boot just fine.

should've mentioned that I already tried booting to Safe Mode to no avail. It does the same thing, just goes to a blank screen.

Finally got my hands on an OEM XP Pro cd. Installation went like a charm. Didn't even have to call MS. Activation went through online.

Yes, the product ID from the VLK cd that I have is 55274270. I tried changing it to 55274OEM, as suggested by the link I posted above, but as I mentioned above that didn't work.

I guess it's worth a try but I have a feeling that they won't help me because I don't have the original oem cd that the os was initially installed from.
