What is the size of the partition being reported while You are using FDISK ?
I know some older PC's use part of the hard drive for the bios.
It is usually 4 Mb.'s, for an EISA (factory installed )...

Yes, or to be safe, Right click on 'My Computer' > 'manage' , then disk management. Make sure You have copied all data you want to the new drive, then right click on the old drive, select 'delete...

Go to the manufaturer's site, & download the latest bios file, and the flash program from them.
Start by creating the bios disk...

It would appaer that your bios is corrupt....unless someone changed the input language of the bios.I would suggest I.D.'ing the motherboard; go to their site & download the latest bios file.

I would follow Nick's point....
Pins missing would be a reason to pitch it if it not working properly, unless you know someone who could redo the DB-15 connector, or you don't mind it being dim...

another point... hard drive manufacturers have specs online for most of their drives for jumper settings.
I download manuals & print off the jumper settings for later use. :)

Alas, most of the "BIG" manufacturers have the $clout to get the hardware makers to tweak the hardware a little...force you to get parts from them

Hi, I would say look at the DB-15 connector (end of the cable that attaches to computer) you'll see three rows of pins...make sure there are 15 pins, none broken off or bent.If they are o.k., hook...

Is the standard network card neccessary? ( is there an onboard network card ),If not , I would suggest a different brand, like D-Link , or Linksys, etc. ....they are inexspensive, & readily available...

Tried the suspect Western Digital in another rig.. same sounds under NTFS file structure ( odd that with Fat 32 no noise?).
RMA w /WD.
So this is another *unxplained* anomoly in my experiance......
