Sorry, I guess I didn't say that clearly enough. It's just a single long-beep. It starts a few seconds after turning power on, gives the single long-beep, and repeats itself every 5 seconds or so....

Why not just set your BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM first, insert your W2K CD and then restart your computer? The install routine should start automatically...no need for a boot disk at all....

Could be that the button you're talking about is the toggle button to switch between the laptop's LCD screen and an external monitor.

Try changing the resolution to a higher setting. If you can't try downloading an updated driver for your screen, and then increase the resolution.

When you say "it stopped"...do you mean it locked up? Or did it lose power completely, and wouldn't turn back on?

From the Command Prompt, type MSCONFIG and press enter. On the GENERAL tab, put a check next to SELECTIVE STARTUP and then deselect LOAD STARTUP ITEMS. Reboot and then run Defrag.
